What Does Brexit Mean For The UK’s Green Policies?

Though there is still a great deal to be worked out, Brexit will have a massive impact on the country. Regulations will need to be reviewed, legislation will likely change and that has left hundreds of trade waste collection companies all over the country unsure as to their future.

As soon as we’re out of the European Union, it will be up to the UK government to implement new policies and take steps to ensure that our green efforts are preserved. We’re all hearing about ‘periods of uncertainty’, but something needs to be done to continue our national move to an eco-friendly society; otherwise, all our hard work will quickly be undone.

What Does Brexit Mean For Green And Trade Waste Collection Businesses?

Essentially, many vital European environmental protections and rulings will no longer apply, unless they are implemented individually or if we continue to follow them based on our future negotiations. It is likely that a great deal of the regulations will stay in place, particularly if we hope to maintain any trade connections with mainland Europe.

Without these EU directives, however, it is likely that Britain’s green energy and waste reduction will falter if they aren’t upheld by trade waste collection companies. This is likely to be a test of each individual company’s dedication to their eco-friendliness, and could be a great test to see just how reliable your trade waste collection company actually are.

Will All Eco-Policies Be Scrapped Following Brexit?

It’s extremely unlikely that Britain won’t continue to follow the EU’s standards, but without the stringent time limits for reaching a green economy. Even if we do decide to change our attitude to the environment, it is still in our best interests to move towards a circular economy which generates as little waste as humanly possible.

As part of the European Union, the UK would have been required to recycle as much as 50% of all its household waste by the year 2020. There were even talks about increasing this to 65% by 2030. Although the UK government has expressed concern over the 2030 targets, it was suggested that those companies which are falling behind could be given more lenient and realistic goals to aim for.

What Does That Mean For The British Home Owner?

This legislation has meant that households around the UK are required to separate from that which can be recycled. Although it was originally considered an annoyance, the recycling rates in England alone have increased from 10% at the turn of the century to more than 44%. It is unlikely that the government’s austerity cuts will stretch to the recycling industry, as it is a cost-effective way of getting rid of waste in our homes.

Will Brexit Mean An End To Our Green Policies?

In both Wales and Scotland, Brexit will not make any difference to their green policies. Both of these countries have already set themselves far more stringent targets than the European Union. In England, it might give ministers the opportunity to set home owners and businesses more lenient recycling targets.

However, the best trade waste collection teams will work to continue recycling and destroying in the most ethical manner possible. Resources and space are both extremely limited in today’s world, and recycling/preventing waste from arriving at the landfill are great ways to solve both of these problems.

Fortunately, the Resources Minister, Rory Stewart, reaffirmed the UK government’s commitment to reaching the 50% target which the EU has recommended.
