Quarterly Recycling Rate In England Reaches Highest Level On Record

After a period of slow growth, England’s recycling rate has risen to 48.5% for the three months between April and June 2014, marking the highest rate achieved for a three year period since reporting of the measure began back in 2010.

England Reaches Record Level For Recycling & Waste Collection

The latest statistics published by Defra also showed that the recycling rate for ‘waste from households’ has risen to 44.9% in the 12 months up to June 2014, increasing from 44% in the previous 12 months leading up to June 2013.

Around 3 million tonnes of ‘waste from households’ was sent for recycling between April and June 2014 which is a rise by 8.5% when compared with April to June 2013. For the 12 months to June 2014, this was almost 10 million tonnes, an increase of 4.6% on the previous year.

The total waste arisings from households includes recycling waste collection and composting, residual waste such as black bags and also any rejects from recycling collections. Between April and June 2014 the total waste arisings from households was 6.2 million tonnes, which is equivalent to 114 kg per person.

Food waste has also seen an increase in recycling rates, with the total tonnage of separately collected food waste sent for composting or anaerobic digestion 11.3% higher in April to June 2014 than the same period in 2013. Green waste had also seen a great improvement, which Defra partly put down to the good weather in Britain during the spring of 2014.

In the year leading up to June 2014, dry recycling increased by 2.4% compared to the same dates for 2013. A total of 1.5 million tonnes of dry recycling came from households in April to June 2014, contributing to a total of 5.8 million tonnes in the 12 months to June 2014. It was found that paper and card made up around 40% of dry recycling by weight, with glass adding a further 19%.
