Confidential Waste Disposal

One of the hot topics in businesses today is the state of their data and how well it’s protected from various employees. According to a report by the Ponemon Institute, most UK staff think that they have far too much access to confidential data.

The Importance Of Confidential Waste Disposal

The IT security firm surveyed 2,276 employees, including 1,166 IT professionals and 1,110 other employees from organisations in the US, UK, France and Germany. The results found that 71% of the other employees said they have access to data they shouldn’t. 54% of these also said that this access is either frequent or very frequent.

This poses serious risks to companies who do not have specific controls over their data. Because if these people have such easy access then it would not be hard for one of them to steal the data and pass it on or for a hacker to break in from outside and take it themselves.

The research also found that only 22% across both groups felt that their organisation placed a very high priority on protecting important information. This will be a surprise to some and not at all to others. Attitudes towards confidential waste disposal and management can vary hugely between different companies and industries.

With a series of high profile hacking cases including the recent Sony case drawing attention to the vulnerabilities of business data and the consequences which come from it being stolen, people are starting to wake up to the threat and take the necessary action.

The report also found that 47% of non-IT workers said that their company takes appropriate steps to protect the company data they access, yet 43% also said that it can take weeks, months or even longer for them to get access to the data they need for their job.

As well as introducing the correct safeguards and privileges, having a confidential waste disposal system is crucial as even data and files which seem useless can be used to steal money or information about your business or use the identities of your employees.
