Cory's Riverside Energy from Waste plant in Belvedere will start taking waste this autumn and be fully operational in May 2011.
The main structure of the building is now in place and the cladding complete. The turbine and generator have been installed and the three boilers are in place. There are currently up to 1,000 men working on the site at any one time and when the facility is fully operational it will provide around 70 full time jobs. The river served plant will see 85% of its waste delivered by water. Construction of the 280-metre jetty is complete and tests on the new electrical system are about to commence.
The new tugs commissioned to serve the plant, the Resource, Recovery, Reclaim and Redoubt have arrived from Holland and are about to start trials on the Thames.
The plant will take waste from the four Western Riverside Waste Authority Boroughs of Wandsworth, Lambeth, Hammersmith and Fulham and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It will also process waste from the City of London and the local Borough of Bexley. On average 585,000 tonnes of waste will be processed each year with the plant producing enough electricity to power 66,000 homes. |
