Battery Recycling Latest Updates
Date: 29-06-2010

Following the implementation of the batteries regulations, the UK has pledged to collect 10% of all batteries sold (based on 2009 sales) by the end of 2010, equating to around 5000 tonnes of batteries. The Environment Agency has revealed that in the first quarter of the year 849 tonnes of the 9,898 tonnes of batteries sold were recycled.

This is a better start than some expected for this initiative, but there is still a need for information campaigns aimed at the end users to effect a culture change in the way batteries are disposed of. The target set for 2012 is 25%, and by 2016 the aim is to be recycling 45%. The easier it is for the end users to recycle their batteries will have a major positive effect on the recycling figures. With this in mind, Recycling Services in conjunction with our collection partners are able to offer a variety of different collection containers and formats across the whole UK.

It is estimated that for every tonne of batteries that are recycled, global carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by between 198kg and 248kg.
