Compliance schemes set up in the UK are confident that the sector will meet the countries WEEE disposal target for 2014. Data outlining the collection rates for between January and Septembershow that a total of 362,912 tonnes of WEEE have been collected throughout the year so far, meaning that the target of 490,000 tonnes by the end of the year will be met.
UK Set To Meet WEEE Disposal Targets
The groups handling the schemes claim that the final total will be made up by the increase which occurs over the Christmas period. Increased spending on presents creates a huge amount of WEEE waste in December as old computers, TV’s and games consoles are upgraded. A change in guidance on B2B and B2C WEEE disposal is also expected to help them achieve their final target.
Despite this success some schemes are worried that they will not be able to meet their targets for large domestic appliances (LDA) – items such as washing machines, fridges and tumble dryers. By the end of September a total of 119,800 tonnes of LDA had been collected, with a target to collect 172,000 tonnes throughout the year.
“So far, the figures on both collections of WEEE and amount of EEE placed on the market in 2014 has followed a similar trend to last year. We continue to see the effect of the move to LED, LCD and plasma screen technology, with the amount of display equipment collections again this year from 2013, against an increase in the amount of products placed on the UK market.”
