Waste management and recycling Case Study (Caterpillar Logistics)
Waste Management for CATERPILLAR LOGISTICS
Managing Waste as a Resource
Recycling Services was selected by Caterpillar Logistics Services (Cat Logistics) to provide the waste removal and recycling for the Desford site. Our team completed a full waste audit, discussing operational waste concerns with site management to assess their requirements and develop a tailored solution for the site. The approach was taken to view the waste as a resource and therefore manage the waste and recycling operation as a business.

We provide a team of operatives on site, along with an experienced supervisor, to manage every aspect of waste and recycling for Cat Logistics at Desford. We have a purpose built materials recycling compound where the team collect and sort materials from every part of the site.
This gives complete control over the waste streams, providing the opportunity to maximise recycling potential and the revenue available from certain recyclable materials.
We involved key personnel and managers at every step of the changeover, ensuring there were clear channels of communication and therefore, guarantee a seamless transition.

Waste Management at other CLS locations
As at Desford, we have now achieved zero to landfill at Cat Logistics’ other sites at Hemel Hempsted and Leeds. These are smaller unmanned operations, but we were still able to design solutions to maximise recycling and eradicate landfill.
Continuous Improvement of waste management and recycling
Our team on site continue to explore and exploit opportunities and initiatives which can improve recycling levels, reduce waste and enhance cost efficiency in the service. This has ranged from streamlining collections of bulked recyclables to introducing central recycling points in the offices. This has turned a variety of costs into revenue streams via diligent waste management and segregation practises.
We are now recovering the maximum value from the recyclable materials for Cat Logistics at Desford, driving down costs and improving processes on site. We also have a solution for the residual general waste, which will be processed through an Energy from Waste facility, meaning that Caterpillar have achieved zero to landfill at this site. Accurate management reporting now allows Caterpillar greater visibility of waste activity on site, capturing vehicle movements, all material weights and revenues and even including carbon footprint figures.

Consolidation and recycling-focused waste management of Caterpillar’s Desford site through Recycling Services has given the company:
- Costs now turned into revenues
- Full control of all waste streams and segregation to maximise recycling opportunity
- Zero to landfill
- A fully regulated and compliant waste management service provided by a major national waste management company.
